Background of the Study
Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are a leading cause of mortality and morbidity worldwide, and they are influenced by various occupational risk factors, including high stress, exposure to hazardous substances, and poor lifestyle choices (Akinwunmi & Okoro, 2023). In the oil and gas industry, workers are particularly at risk due to the nature of their work environment, which often involves long hours, high stress, physical inactivity, and exposure to environmental pollutants, all of which can increase the likelihood of developing cardiovascular diseases (Olalekan et al., 2023). In Rivers State, a key hub for oil industry operations in Nigeria, workers are frequently exposed to these risk factors, making it essential to implement preventive measures to reduce the burden of cardiovascular diseases.
Occupational health nurses play a pivotal role in promoting health and preventing disease in the workplace. They are responsible for monitoring the health of workers, providing education on health risks, implementing preventive strategies, and offering support for lifestyle changes (Okafor et al., 2024). In the oil industry, occupational health nurses can contribute significantly to the prevention of cardiovascular diseases by conducting health screenings, promoting healthy lifestyle behaviors, and managing risk factors like hypertension and obesity. However, despite the growing recognition of the role of occupational health nurses, there is limited research on their specific contributions to preventing cardiovascular diseases in oil industry workers in Rivers State.
This study aims to investigate the role of occupational health nurses in preventing cardiovascular diseases among oil industry workers in Rivers State, focusing on their interventions and strategies to reduce risk factors for CVDs in this high-risk population.
Statement of the Problem
The oil industry in Rivers State is characterized by hazardous working conditions that increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases among workers. While occupational health nurses play an essential role in promoting health and preventing diseases, there is limited research on their specific contributions to the prevention of cardiovascular diseases in this industry. Without a comprehensive understanding of the role of occupational health nurses in preventing CVDs, efforts to improve worker health and reduce the incidence of cardiovascular diseases in the oil sector may be less effective. This study aims to address this gap by investigating the role of occupational health nurses in preventing cardiovascular diseases among oil industry workers in Rivers State.
Objectives of the Study
1. To investigate the role of occupational health nurses in preventing cardiovascular diseases among oil industry workers in Rivers State.
2. To assess the effectiveness of the interventions implemented by occupational health nurses in preventing cardiovascular diseases in the oil industry.
3. To identify the challenges faced by occupational health nurses in the prevention of cardiovascular diseases among oil industry workers in Rivers State.
Research Questions
1. What role do occupational health nurses play in preventing cardiovascular diseases among oil industry workers in Rivers State?
2. How effective are the interventions of occupational health nurses in preventing cardiovascular diseases among oil industry workers?
3. What challenges do occupational health nurses face in preventing cardiovascular diseases in the oil industry in Rivers State?
Research Hypotheses
1. Occupational health nurses play a significant role in preventing cardiovascular diseases among oil industry workers in Rivers State.
2. The interventions implemented by occupational health nurses are effective in reducing the risk of cardiovascular diseases among oil industry workers in Rivers State.
3. There are significant challenges faced by occupational health nurses in the prevention of cardiovascular diseases among oil industry workers in Rivers State.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on occupational health nurses working in the oil industry in Rivers State. The research will examine their role in preventing cardiovascular diseases and assess the effectiveness of their interventions. Limitations include the availability of occupational health nurses for interviews and the potential for response bias in self-reported data.
